Sodium levulinate is the sodium salt of levulinic acid. As a preservative, it can help to improve the shelf life of products by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. There are no restrictions on the use of sodium levulinate in cosmetic products in the European Union and it is considered to be non-irritating and harmless(1).
